Though it may seem the world tries to tell you differently, the truth is no playbook exists containing the single best way to parent.
Do we need to say it louder for our friends in the back?
If someone tells you that you are not parenting the right way, you need to remove yourself from that person’s sphere of influence and join a group of supportive moms who know better.
Mothering happens in a million different…and beautiful ways. Some moms work outside the home while others work as stay-at-home parents. Some are parenting with a partner while others are solo moms.
But, no matter how you go about parenting, the truth is this mom journey is infinitely better when you find a group of moms with whom you can navigate those child-rearing years…and here are our top 5 reasons why.
We don’t like to talk about the feelings of isolation that can well up within us, especially during the newborn season when we’re up and down throughout the night and experiencing some pretty significant sleep deprivation.
Having a group of supportive moms who can empathize with you gives you a safe place to share those feelings of loneliness while simultaneously allowing you to make precious connections with others.
There’s nothing quite like having a trusted group of friends who, when you’re utterly exhausted, are happy to step in and take your little love for a couple of hours so you can enjoy a much-needed nap or break. Whether you need to run to the grocery store, get a haircut, or go in for a dental cleaning, knowing your friends are happy to watch your kiddo can be a real life saver!
When you grow your friend group you expand your knowledge bank. Every person in your trusted group learned to parent a little differently and, odds are, they know of tips, techniques, and tactics that you haven’t learned…yet.
It’s especially beneficial to diversify your group so that it includes moms who are at varying stages of the parenting journey—this gives you moms to learn from and moms with whom you’ll serve as the wise, experienced parent.
Don’t underestimate the importance of this! We know how quickly kids— especially babies! —outgrow outfits and toys. A supportive mom group is a veritable treasure trove of children’s equipment, accessories, toys, and clothing that can be passed around the group.
Ask any mom and she’ll tell you…there are days when parenting feels fruitless, frustrating, and just plain hard. And yet, moms often feel as if they can’t voice these feelings without sounding like a failure.
Other moms have been right where you are and understand there are days when things go sideways and leave you wondering if you are really cut out for this parenting gig (hint…you are!). Let them support and fill your mothering cup when you’re running on empty, then you can fill up the cup of another mom when you see her in need.
And so…
As you navigate this incredible, challenging, and beautiful journey that is motherhood, we encourage you to carefully curate a group of supportive mom friends. And don’t be surprised if these connections become some of the most meaningful friendships of your life. Raising children within a supportive community of women tends to turn friends into family.
