For those of you who are regular followers of our blog (thank you!), you know that Nalakai is a company born out of the love of family. When our founder, Anne, first discovered ring slings as a new mom, she loved the security and freedom…but finding a sling made from the perfect fabric was a struggle. Synthetic fabrics were far from being eco-friendly and obscenely hot, and slings made from 100% linen, while much more eco-conscious, were unbearably stiff and scratchy.
And so, the hunt was on for the perfect fabric—one that was kind to the environment and deliciously comfy for parents and their babies.
After much searching, we settled on a unicorn fabric of sorts made from the perfect blend of bamboo and linen, and we thought we’d share with you today what makes this fabric positively perfect for our ring slings.
You’ve likely heard that bamboo is an amazing fabric. These days, it seems you can find all sorts of products—from bed sheets to pajamas—crafted from bamboo. Known for its hypoallergenic and antimicrobial properties, bamboo is also highly absorbent and wicks moisture away from the skin.
The bamboo fiber itself is filled with tiny gaps that improve ventilation in warm weather and provide insulation in cold temperatures. Bamboo also offers UV protection, cutting out 97.5% of harmful UV rays. This means you can take your little one with you everywhere during the summer while keeping him or her cool and safe!
We absolutely love bamboo because it is a sustainable and eco-friendly crop. It is also one of the fastest growing plants in the world and it grows without the need for harsh pesticides, which damage the soil and waterways.
Fabric made from bamboo is so silky soft and, when woven together with linen, it makes an incredibly strong and durable material.
Linen is a natural woven fabric made from the flax plant. Flax fibers are durable and, when woven into linen, become extremely strong. Known as the world’s strongest natural fiber, linen is long-lasting and will never stretch or lose its shape. This makes it the perfect material for a baby carrier. You may notice that new linen has a slight crispiness to it, but after a few washes, it becomes smooth and wonderfully soft.
Linen is perfect for babies because it is naturally hypoallergenic and skin-friendly. It’s the perfect fabric to use in ring slings because it is cool and breathable when the weather is warm, yet it has an amazing warming effect in winter, ensuring you and your little one will be perfectly comfortable all year round!
