Pregnancy. There's no experience quite like it and each and every journey is unique to it's own. No one can prepare you, it's one of those things that you have to experience to fully understand. People often forget about the fourth trimester, where your baby still feels and believes it is a part of mama. The highs and lows, sleepless nights, healing your body and mind, and adjusting to life as a new mom. Your new baby needs so much love and attention, and you could spend all day just staring into their sweet, tiny little eyes. Overall postpartum wellness is often overlooked as we care for our family, and it may feel like we just don't have the time or energy.
Let's try to keep things simple. You don't have to book a full on wellness retreat or have the time to cook tasty vegan meals while juggling emotions, life, and baby. Your family needs the best version of you. It is so important to take care of your body and mind as you recover from all the changes your body has experienced. Here are some easy and quick tips to help you feel your best, so you can take the best care of your family.
Never underestimate the power of a walk. The fresh air and vitamin D alone is enough to boost your mental health while simultaneously achieving a gentle cardiovascular workout. If you can't escape to take a walk alone you can always strap your little one in our Nalakai Ring Slings to keep them safe and close while you continue on with your wellness walks. Walking helps to ground your body and mind. And if your little one is fussy, a walk outside will calm them quickly. If you wear your baby in a sling, the motion rocks them to sleep and the front carry position massages your baby's belly, which is a huge help if your little one is colicky or has indigestion.
The power of meditation is amazing. You don't have to be an expert. None of us are. Start slow. Do 5 minutes a day, then build yourself up to 10. There are a ton of guided meditation apps that can help you understand the process better and aid you and your mind into the meditative state. You can meditate anywhere really. For me I find it most effective by making a space for it. A candle and pillow really does the trick. I find Ajna's Meditation Cushion to be super comfy! It helps me sit correctly which in turn helps the energy to flow naturally and freely between my chakras. I like the free Calm mediation app. You can choose short, guided meditations for sleep, relaxation, energy in the morning and even for relief from stress and anxiety.
This is also known as abdominal breathing. It is a fantastic way to control the speed of your breathing. Because you're focusing on breathing through your abdominal area it's great to gently strengthen your core after pregnancy.
Lie down on your back with your knees bent. Breathe in slowly through your nose so that your stomach moves out against your hand, tighten your stomach muscles, letting them fall inward as you exhale through pursed lips. This type of mindful breathing is so effective at calming not only your mind but your body. You will instantly notice your central nervous system slowing down.
This is a beautiful holistic healing method that uses natural plant extracts to promote health and well-being. Essential oils are used to promote a healthy body and mind. There are tons of essential oils that target different issues. I love using my essential oil diffuser with lavender before I go to bed to give me a sense of calmness and relaxation. Lavender is safe to diffuse (in small amounts) around babies and it is antibacterial so it will clean the space and help keep your family healthy. Essential oil bath and shower bombs are also a great way to reap the benefits both topically as well as breathing them in. One of my favorites are Praniva's Organic Essential Oil Shower Bombs- Orange, Mint, & Lemongrass. It's the perfect blend to wake me up in the morning and start my day feeling calm.
Also, never hesitate to call a friend. There can be a million different lists on wellness tips that work great but sometimes in life you just need a quick chat to get you right back on track. My mom tribe has been a lifesaver. We share tips, baby hacks and have a safe space to talk about our struggles. Even a 5 minute zoom coffee chat with my girls will feed my soul all day,
