Hello, friends, Anne here. I thought I’d share with you how Nalakai came to be—how we created a business rooted in the special bond between mothers (and dads!) and their babies. Creating Nalakai turned out to be the most fun and fulfilling job of my life, and I’m excited to share the journey with you!
In 2013, I decided to leave my career as a corporate lawyer and move to the Pacific coast of Costa Rica in search of a more fulfilling life. Putting down roots in this gorgeous country was the best thing that ever happened to me…until my son, Kai, was born in 2016, and my entire world changed for the better.
Becoming a mother has been the single greatest joy of my life, and as Kai and I got to know one another, I became a big believer in the concept of attachment parenting, a theory made famous by famed pediatrician Dr. William Sears. The idea is simple—that infants are born with a strong instinct to be near their mother. The more they are held and physically close to their mother or primary caregiver in their first year, the safer and more secure they will feel. And from this place of security, an infant will feel confident enough to explore the world and develop their independence.
It wasn’t until I was pregnant with my daughter, Nala, that I discovered ring slings. I fell in love with the easy style and soft carry but hated the stiff, scratchy feel of 100% linen slings. I decided to make my own slings using incredibly soft and eco-friendly bamboo fabric mixed with linen and to name the company after my two babies. And, just like that, Nalakai was born!
Cultivating the Nalakai brand and connecting with my customers has been such a fun and fulfilling part of my life. I love to have photoshoots with my family and friends and to connect with you, our amazing customers and followers. We have created an incredible community of moms who support one another in all areas of child rearing…and for that, I am tremendously grateful!
Your support means the world to me. I get so excited to see your messages, reviews, and social media photos of your gorgeous families using your Nalakai slings. I love seeing all the places you go with your sweet babies in tow while wearing your ring slings. And I still do all the customer service for the company because I enjoy connecting with you all so much. If you send us a DM or an email, you’ll hear back from me!
It's hard to believe it’s been nearly 10 years since I first decided to take a leap of faith and move to Costa Rica, but it was the perfect decision. This ruggedly beautiful country and its people offer daily inspiration with its stunning, natural, and minimalistic lifestyle.
I am so grateful for you and your support because it allows me to work doing my favorite thing in the world—supporting mothers and families and finding creative and fun ways to serve you!

Author Marcie Macari had this to say about childbirth...
“Birth is an opportunity to transcend. To rise above what we are accustomed to, reach deeper inside ourselves than we are familiar with, and to see not only what we are truly made of, but the strength we can access in and through birth.”
The process of shuttling new life into this world is nothing short of miraculous, and the transformations and adjustments that take place within our bodies to make this happen are breathtaking.
